Cedar Fence FAQs

Jul 16, 2022

Carnahan-White has been designing and installing fences in the Ozarks since 1952. We are experts in residential fences, commercial fences, security fences, and athletic courts and fencing.

A popular type of wooden fence we install is cedar fencing. In this blog, Carnahan-White answers some basic FAQ questions about cedar fencing.

Is Cedar Fence Common?

Cedar is one of the most commonly used materials for wooden fencing, alongside pine. It is very durable and aesthetically pleasing, making it a popular choice for residential fencing.

Why is Cedar a Good Choice for Fencing?

Cedar fencing is very durable and can last around 25 years, much longer than pine. It does not have to be pressure treated and is naturally strong, holding up well to weather, winds, and pests. It is considered an eco-friendly option since it does not have to be treated with chemicals like many other wood types.

Does Cedar Fencing Have a Smell?

Most wooden fencing doesn’t have a smell, but cedar has a natural aroma that can actually be quite pleasing. It is a very fresh smell, and you would likely recognize it if you have ever smelled cedar wood chips or furniture.

How Long Does a Cedar Fence Last?

A cedar fence typically lasts about 20 to 25 years. Properly maintaining your fence can help it last longer.

Do You Have to Stain A Cedar Fence?

Staining or sealing your cedar fence is the best way to properly protect it from the elements, including weather damage, rot, and pest damage. A fence that is stained or sealed will typically last longer and need less maintenance than unstained wood.

How Do You Maintain a Cedar Fence?

Cedar fencing is not high maintenance, but doing yearly inspections on it can help you find and fix small issues before they become major problems. Cedar fences should be cleaned once a year to remove built-up dirt, mold, and mildew. Not removing mold can lead to problems like wood rot.

Cedar fencing should also be sealed with a waterproof sealant every 4 or 5 years to help protect it from rain and moisture damage.
